How long do you keep the original packaging for a purchased electronic item?
I recently bought some electronics (DVD player, scanner, TV). I assume the vendor will not accept a return without the original packaging, however this is a pain to keep around since it is bulky. But if I throw it away and then have a problem I assume I won't be able to return the item. What is a good length of time to keep the packaging in case this happens?

- till warranty runs out
- Most stores won't take it back after 30 days. Keep the receipt.
- untill there is no way i will return or replace an item.....5 years or more sometimes
- till the warranty runs out
- Until the store receipt tells you you can take them back. After that the box makes no difference, as you will have to deal with the insurance provider.
- I usually keep packaging until the return date runs out then i throw it out. I would recommend keeping it for that time which is usually 30 days or more depending on the store.
- I keep the product's original packaging for the length of returnable time or warranty period if they have an extended warranty better than the store's return policy period. If you wish to dispose of the original packaging, I'd say wait 14 days then go ahead. You can always find a generic box to place it in for shipment to a manufacturer. Keep the receipts, though, someplace safe.
- I used to keep such things in a file folder----but unless it is a big-ticket item like a stove, fridge or washer, I realized that shipping it for repairs will probably cost more than a new item. I guess they COUNT on consumers thinking that.
