Can you use one brand of power pack (supply) with another brand of strobe heads?

I'm looking into buying some lights for studio work. If I buy a power supply/pack that is made by one brand, can I use another brand of strobe heads to use in conjunction? It doesn't matter right? The male/female parts of both power packs and heads are all the same right?

1. Not quite, but some times it can be interchangeable; I did this in the past, with no apparent damage to the unit.
